You can take free lessons online. You would first have to learn the alphabet. Then, you can start learning the different phrases and sentence structure. There are links that can help you understand points most Americans find difficult. Also, there are audio links on the lesson pages, so that you can listen to the pronunciation of each word. In Japanese, similar to Chinese, the pronunciation differs, depending on the word.
